Attempting to mix both retro/heritage design and innovative platform creation is more risky biz, but GM is quite happy to take that risk, as it brings another of its year 2000 concept cars from turntable to 2003 production reality. The retro/heritage part isn't difficult to spot: The nose is a modernized interpretation of an early '50s Chevy pickup, as is the rest of the general shape. Besides conventional side mirrors, the most obvious change for production is the rear-fender design, recontoured with a bigger, faster-looking opening. The front fenders are tidied some and the grille is more realistic. Headlights are a bit bigger, as split by the production version of the grille. The look is street-rod sport-truck clean, unadorned, nicely proportioned, and looking ready for any cruise night. Plus, the 19" front and 20" rear wheels survive. With a retractable hardtop that folds into an area just after of the seats. It features a self-covering tonneau to preserve that smooth look.

SSR's V-8 engine offers tru sports car performance with enhanced ride and handling with 19 and 20 inch rear performance tires mounted on five-spoke alloy sport wheels. Its interior is clean, simple and comfortable for three passengers. The center portion of the bench seat may be folded down and used as an armrest, with cupholders that slide out from the inside. Brushed aluminum trim accents the steering wheel, dashboard and door panels. To create extra interior space, designers moved the auto trans. shifter from the floor to the steering wheel. A dash mounted panel door conceals controls for the climate and stereo including a navigation system, GM's OnStar communication system, and Windows computer with Internet and e-mail access.
